Andaya: Sara-Gibo tandem firming up; top political parties caught unaware

“It’s a circus!” This is how former Camarines Sur Rep. Rolando Andaya Jr. described current developments in the country’s political arena, saying that these were apparently triggered by the possible team up of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro in next year’s presidential race.

Andaya noted that there is an on-going squabble among leaders of the ruling PDP-Laban with Senator Manny Pacquiao fighting off efforts to oust him as acting president and member..

Pacquiao, Andaya said, may join former Speaker and incumbent Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, if a PDP-Laban faction reportedly supported by party chairman, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi and President Rodrigo Duterte, succeeds in plotting against the boxing icon.

Alvarez has moved to revived Reporma when he resigned as member and secretary general of PDP-Laban. This came a few months after a successful Lower House leadership coup allegedly engineered by Mayor Duterte ousted him as speaker. Andaya admitted that the Pacquiao-Alvarez alliance in Reporma remains a speculation but this development also confirms the state of disarray the ruling PDP-Laban is currently suffering from.

Cusi, party vice chairman, is reportedly behind the plans to push for the presidential bid of Senator Bong Go and his possible running mate, President Duterte.

Aside from Reporma, the LIberal Party is also interested in getting Pacquiao, said Andaya.

However, with the LP leadership still bent at pushing for Vice President Leni Robredo to run for a higher office, a vice presidential slot may be the highest the party can offer Pacquiao.

“It’s a circus. It’s actually everybody trying to find a way to forcibly fit in a group na hindi naman talaga sila bagay magkasama (yet they are not really compatible together),” said Andaya in a media interview yesterday.

“The group of Sara-Gibo will move forward and all of these things we will just watch,” said Andaya.

According to the former budget secretary, both the mayor and Teodoro are not interested in joining the circus but will be watching on the sidelines.

Teodoro is set to return to Davao City on Saturday, July 3, to have his second jab of the vaccine for the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Teodoro has vowed to help Mayor Duterte in her anti-COVID 19 campaign.

“This is what Sara wants. This is what Gibo also is willing to do for her,” said Andaya.
