Sotto files resolution commending Yuko Saso for US Women's Open feat

Senate President Vicente Sotto III has filed a resolution congratulating Filipino-Japanese golfer Yuka Saso for her historic win in the 76th US Women's Open.

“Congratulations for bringing an unexpected victory for our people! Our hearts beam with pride and joy with this milestone in Philippine sports. We are extremely proud of your achievement," Sotto said in a statement Tuesday, June 8.

"The sight of you with that birdie on the third playoff hole, which gave you the 2021 US Women’s Open title, was the perfect weekday opening that brought a much-needed breather to the Filipino people from the barrage of gloomy updates on the continued threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19)," he told Saso.

Several senators have praised Saso, saying her feat was a "blast of fresh air" amid the pandemic.

In the resolution he filed Monday, June 7, Sotto also said the 19-year-old's win the US Women's Open Golf Championship "has put the name of the Philippines on the map, and has absolutely given joy, pride, honor, and inspiration to the country and the Filipino people."

He noted that this was not the first time that Saso made history, having won both individual and team gold in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

She is the first Filipino and youngest to win in the US Women's Open so far.

"This achievement should serve as a fitting reminder to all Filipinos that amid our struggles, there is always something good to look forward to. Thank you, Yuka Saso for being the Filipino people’s silver lining during this challenging time," said Sotto, reportedly the best golfer among Senate members.
