Roberto Gomez advanced to the last 64 of the World Pool Championship following twin victories in the group stage of the competition being held in Milton Keynes, England.
Gomez beat England’s Stewart Colclough, 9-8, before foiling the comeback of Austria’s Albin Ouschan, 9-7, to earn his way in the knockout stage of the world 9-ball competition.
Jeff de Luna, however, suffered an early exit with losses to Switzerland’s Dimitri Jungo, 9-5, and Austrian female entrant Jasmin Ouschan, 9-5.
Gomez is scheduled to face South African Muhummed Daydat in the round-of-64 Tuesday, with the winner facing Germany legend Ralf Souquet or Singaporean Aloysius Yapp.
His match against Daydat will be a race-to-11 affair.
The 42-year-old native of Zamboanga City is hoping to replicate his performance in 2007 when he made it all the way to the final of the event held at the Araneta Coliseum.
Gomez, however, lost to England’s Daryl Peach, 17-15.
