PH to get 10 million COVID vaccines in June as global supply improves — Duterte

The country can expect 10 million doses of coronavirus vaccines this month as the tight global supply has started to ease, President Duterte said Monday.

The President said the vaccines long awaited by the country have started to arrive in bulk, adding that even the United States could now share its residual supply after having inoculated most of its population.

"The topic of everybody now is the COVID-19 and the corresponding vaccine that we have expected for a long time, at dumating naman ‘yong mga medisina. Hindi sabay-sabay (It won't be simultaneous)," Duterte said during a televised address Monday, June 7.

"Just yesterday, June 6, we received another 1 million doses of Sinovac. This is a part of the 10 million doses that we expect to receive this month, according to our vaccine coordinator Secretary Carlito Galvez. Coming our way would include Sinovac, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Sputnik, and Moderna," he added.

Duterte admitted the country initially had difficulty securing coronavirus vaccines due to the world's thin supply. The situation however has turned a corner as the world's vaccine supply has started to increase.

Duterte previously lamented that the rich countries have cornered 80 percent of the world's supply of vaccines, leaving the developing nations like the Philippines to scramble for the remaining stocks.

"Nandiyan ‘yong medisina. Pinakahintay natin halos isang taon. Kaya lang naman nagkukulang-kulang talaga ‘yong suplay (The vaccines are here. We've wait for them for almost a year. There was a shortage of supply) so it took us time to receive our share," Duterte said.

"But now eh medyo maluwang na ang mundo, nabakunahan na sa Amerika halos lahat (But now the world's supply has eased. America has vaccinated almost all), they can afford now to share the residual supply nila sa vaccine," he said.

The country has so far received more than 9 million doses of coronavirus vaccines, mostly Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Sputnik V. Over 1 million Filipinos have already been fully vaccinated.

Vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr., in the meeting with the President Monday, admitted that country's vaccine rollout has slowed down due to the delay in the delivery of vaccines.

He likewise informed the President that the delivery of 1 million Sputnik V doses on June 8 will not push through, adding he intends to talk with representatives from Russian supplier about the new delivery date.

Galvez earlier announced the country can expect 11 million doses of vaccines this June, including 4.5 million from Sinovac, 2.28 million Pfizer doses and 2 million AstraZeneca jabs through the COVAX facility, the 250,000 doses of Moderna purchased by the private sector, and the 1 million Sputnik V doses.

The vaccine supply will increase by 10.67 million by July. The deliveries include 4.5 million Sinovac doses, 1 million Moderna shots, 1.17 million AstraZeneca dose, 1 million doses of Sputnik V, and 3 to 4 million Pfizer or AstraZeneca doses under COVAX.
