DILG raps six barangay captains for mass gathering violation

Six barangay captains are facing charges for their alleged failure to enforce regulations against "super-spreader" events, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año said Monday night, June 7.

In a meeting with President Duterte, Año said the concerned barangay officials were tagged in separate mass gathering activities in their respective areas.

These involve the Gubat sa Ciudad incident in Barangay 171, Caloocan City; recreational and resort operations in San Jose, Navotas City; boxing matches in Barangay 181 and 182 in Tondo, Manila; the Bakas River event in Barangay Matiktik, Norzagaray, Bulacan; Barangay Balabag, Boracay Island and Barangay Sambiray, Malay, Aklan; and Club Holic Bar and Restaurant, Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City.

“Sa inyo pong pag-uutos na kasuhan natin ang mga barangay officials, anim po ang nakita natin dito at nakasuhan (Based on your directive to file cases against barangay officials, six of them were caught and charged),’’ Año said.

The DILG chief also noted in his report that 50,021 face mask violators were recorded from May 31 to June 6.

Of the 50,021 violators, Año said that 28,087 were warned; 17,395 were fined; 3,413 were ordered to do community service, while 1,126 were arrested.

The DILG boss added that there were 613 violators on the conduct of mass gathering events. Of the figure, 579 were warned, 28 were fined, while six were directed to render community service.

As for physical distancing violations, Año said a total of 13,882 were reported, with 1,055 violators warned; 1,880 fined; 325 compelled to do community service; and 622 arrested. (Chito A. Chavez)
