Danao City to host MTB trials this weekend

Danao City, Cebu has offered its facilities to host the training and trial races of the national team bound for the 31^st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam late this year.

Philcycling Vice President and Mountainbike (MTB) Commission chairman Boying Rodriguez disclosed this Tuesday, June 8 with more than 40 participants expected to compete in the national MTB trials starting this weekend.

This would be the first local race since the pandemic with the association selecting three male and three female riders in the cross-country event to be sent for the biennial meet, as well as three male and three female for the relay teams.

Race trials for downhill riders will be later this month where they seek two men and two women for the SEAG.

The association also plans to use the trial races to select junior riders for future tournaments.

“Our goal is to have a farm team because we also have junior competitions abroad. They will be the future elite riders and we have to nurture them,” Rodriguez said during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Online Forum.

Rodriguez added they selected the course for the trials due to its technicality to challenge the riders.

“Medyo matindi tong course natin dito. Puro uphill. Yung mga downhill naman, masyadong technical,” he said.

Among the notable riders racing in the trials are Ariana Dormitorio and Nino Surban.

Rodriguez said they also plan to host the training of the SEAG-bound team there for three to four months before the biennial meet.

There will be 12 events in the Vietnam edition with the PH team seeking to maintain or improve its three gold, four silver and four bronze medal haul in the 2019 Manila edition.
