The cases of the six barangay captains found to have failed to prevent the super spreader events in their respective areas are now with the provincial prosecutors’ office, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Edurado Año said on Tuesday, June 8.
In an interview over CNN Philippines, Año said that criminal and administrative charges were filed against Barangay 171 Captain Romeo Rivera for the May 9, 2021 swimming pool party in Gubat sa Ciudad Resort which is located in his area.
“Sa ngayon anim (barangay captains charged), meron pa tayong inaantay galing sa LGUs (local government units) pero itong anim na ito nasampa na mga kaso na ito (At present there are six. We are still waiting for the others from the LGUs but cases have been filed against these six),’’ Año said.
The DILG chief noted that the charges against the six barangay captains are being heard at the prosecutors’ office.
Año also revealed that he is waiting for the report of the Quezon City government regarding the “ayuda” mass gathering event in Barangay Matandang Balara where the DILG may provide inputs on its recommendation if there is a need to persecute or file cases against the concerned parties.
“Pati report din dito kay Councilor Franz Pumaren, I’m also waiting for the report at rereviewhin natin yan at kung ano yung kaukulang aksyon na dapat gawin natin. Alam mo kailangan kasi talaga ipapatupad natin implement itong paghihigpit (health protocols) para matigil kasi yung (COVID-19) transmission (Even the report on Councilor Franz Pumaren, I’m waiting for the report to review it and find out what action should be taken. There is a strong need for us to strictly implement, to end the transmission)’’ Año said.
The DILG chief stressed the need for everyone to observe the minimum public health standards aside from following the law, ordinances and Omnibus guideline regulations of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to prevent the spread of the virus.
“At dapat din ang ating mga government officials sa LGUs, barangay captains ang magiging mga tagapagpatupad nito (health protocols). Yun ang paraan para matigil ang transmission (of the virus). (The government officials in the LGUs, barangay captains are supposed to be the ones to enforce the law. That is the solution to end the transmission),’’ he added.
With regard to the supposed mass gathering event in a hotel in Cebu of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte’s supporters, Año will welcome any complete information to enable them to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible for organizing the activity will be made answerable.
“Wala tayong sinisino dito. Kahit sino tamaan (influential) dito basta ang importante dito wala nang ganyang mga events (mass gathering) na mangyayari all around the country kasi nasa pandemic pa tayo (We will apply the law fairly to anyone, even if it involves influential personalities. What is important is to end these kinds of events from occurring all around the country since we are still in the pandemic),’’ Año said. (Chito A. Chavez)
