Villar says Aparri anti-flood structure has a double purpose; Find out what he means

A key flood control structure in a coastal town in Aparri, Cagayan is expected to double as a biking and jogging haven once it has been completed, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.

The P40-million flood control structure in Barangy Punta, Aparri has a progress rate of 47.55 percent as of May 2021, DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar said.

“The project is in line with the national government’s effort to mitigate flooding in Cagayan Province. With its strategic placing near the mouth of the Cagayan River and the Babuyan Channel, the structure is seen to protect lives and properties of people residing in Barangay Punta,” he said.

Aside from serving as a protective structure, the esplanade along the flood control structure will double as a venue for recreational and outdoor activities like jogging and biking.

Villar said that they are "currently fast-tracking the building process".

According to the secretary, the project includes the construction of a 254.80-linear meter flood control structure with an additional 5.16-meter slope protection throughout its length.

It will pave the way for the construction of Aparri Boulevard as well as the rehabilitation of Aparri Port.

The flood control project has received funding from fiscal years 2020 and 2021 under the Multi-Year Contractual Authority (MYCA).
