Suicide attempt of a trainee cop in Cavite underscores need of regular neuro-psychiatric tests-Eleazar

A suicide attempt of a police trainee in Cavite has further encouraged the Philippine National Police (PNP) leadership to implement a regular neuro-psychiatric tests on all its police personnel.

PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo T Eleazar the incident shows why the mental health of PNP personnel must be regularly checked.

Based on initial reports, the 25-year-old police trainee is from the PNP Maritime Group. He was found wounded last Sunday, June 6 on the rooftop of his boarding house by fellow trainees and was rushed to the Divine Grace Hospital for medical treatment.

The police trainee, who has a record of depression, survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Eleazar directed the immediate superiors of the police trainee to monitor him closely and extend the assistance he needs.

"Our personnel are undergoing rigorous training as early as the training period. This is why I reiterate the importance of subjecting all personnel to neuro-psychiatric tests to determine if they are mentally and emotionally capable of being part of the organization,” Eleazar said.

"This kind of test will greatly help in preventing personnel from inflicting harm on themselves or on other people,” he added.

Meanwhile, the PNP chief tasked police commanders to strictly monitor the behavior of their men, especially if they are manifesting signs of emotional and mental problems.
