DOH: Metro Manila's share to PH's total COVID-19 cases declined to 13%

The number of infections from Metro Manila now only accounts to about 13 percent of the country’s total number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday, June 7.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the number of infections in the National Capital Region (NCR) has been decreasing since the recent surge in cases early this year.

“Nakikita rin natin ngayon na ang National Capital Region ay talagang bumababa na (We are also seeing now that the number of cases in the National Capital Region is really declining). It’s share of cases in the totality of cases in the country is just about 13 percent na lang ngayon,” Vergeire said in a press briefing.

“When during the surge, tayo ay umaabot ng 30 to 40 percent share na mga kaso. Ngayon ay 13 percent (we reached 30 to 40 percent share of cases. Right now, it is 13 percent),” she added.

The health official bared that about 40 percent of the total number of infections in the country were from the rest of Luzon, about 25 percent were from the Mindanao, while about 20 percent were from the Visayas.

In its latest monitoring report, the OCTA Research group said the number of new cases in areas within NCR-plus resumed a downward trajectory after a week of unstable trends.

The independent research team reported that the reproduction number in Metro Manila from May 31 to June 6 was 0.74, while the one-week growth rate in new cases was negative 11 percent with a positivity rate of 9 percent.

However, experts expressed concern over the situation over Davao City, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Koronadal, Cotabato City in Mindanao, Bacolod, Iloilo City, Dumaguete in Visayas and Tuguegarao.

Citing the data from the DOH, OCTA reported that Davao City is projected to surpass Quezon City with the highest number of new cases this week.
