CEAP to confer Pro Deo et Patria award to Jesuit priest Bernas

The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) will confer on the late Father Joaquin G. Bernas, SJ, the CEAP Pro Deo et Patria award on Nov. 9.

The CEAP announced the news on their Facebook page Monday, June 7.

"During the CEAP National Board Meeting, the Board decided to confer the 2021 CEAP Pro Deo et Patria award posthumously to Fr. Joaquin G. Bernas, SJ," read the post.

CEAP said the Pro Deo et Patria is the highest award given by the Association to deserving individual/s who manifest "an exemplary attitude of love for God and country and his/her faithfulness to Catholic teachings as part of service to God."

The Jesuit priest and noted constitutionalist Father Joaquin Bernas died at age 88 last March.

Bernas finished law at the Ateneo Law School in 1962 and placed 9th in the Bar examinations.

He taught and was appointed dean twice of the same law school until his retirement in 2004.

The priest was part of the Constitutional Commission, which drafted the 1987 Constitution.

Bernas also served as ADMU president and was an opinion columnist for a major daily newspaper.
