5.1-magnitude quake jolts Surigao del Norte

A series of earthquakes struck Surigao del Norte on Sunday, June 6, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Based on the Phivolcs’ updated earthquake bulletin, the strongest among the temblors occurred at around 11:20 a.m. with a magnitude measured at 5.1.

Its epicenter was plotted 29 kilometers (km) northeast of Burgos, Surigao del Norte and had a depth of focus of 9 km.

Phivolcs said Intensity IV or “moderately strong shaking” was felt in Burgos and Sta. Monica, Surigao del Norte, while Intensity III or “weak shaking” was detected in Dapa, San Isidro and General Luna, Surigao Del Norte.

Intensity II or “slightly felt shaking” was monitored in Hinunangan, Silago, Hinundayan, Southerm Leyte; Surigao City and Socorro, Surigao Del Norte

Instrumental Intensity II was measured in Surigao City, Surigao Del Norte and Instrumental Intensity I in Abuyog and Palo, Leyte.

The agency initially measured the temblor at magnitude 5.8.

Aftershocks are expected following the quake, it said.

Minutes before that, an offshore 4.9 magnitude quake hit the same area at around 10:59 a.m.

Phivolcs had reported the magnitude of the tremor at 5.2.

Its center was located 15 km Northeast of Burgos, Surigao del Norte, and had a depth of focus of 9 km.

Intensity IV was perceived in Burgos and Sta. Monica, Surigao del Norte.

Meanwhile, Intensity III was recorded in Dapa, San Isidro and General Luna, Surigao Del Norte; and Intensity II in Hinunangan, and Silago, Southern Leyte; Surigao City and Socorro, Surigao Del Norte.

Phivolcs said Instrumental Intensity II was measured in Surigao City, Surigao Del Norte; and Intensity I in Abuyog, Leyte

A 4.8-magnitude quake also hit 19 km northeast of Burgos, Surigao del Norte at around 11:40 a.m.

The agency does not expect damage or aftershocks following the quake.
