2 Pinoy cadets to become part of US Coast Guard Academy, Class of 2025
Two young Filipino cadets are set to become part of the prestigious United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), Class of 2025, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced on Saturday, June 5.
Cadet Kieth Nico Carreon and Cadet John Rex Gaviola were chosen from a total of 111 aspiring PCG cadets who applied for the international scholarship program.

PCG Commandant Admiral George Ursabia Jr. led the oath-taking and scholarship contract signing of the two Coast Guard-sponsored cadets to the USCGA for the class of 2025 at the National Headquarters, Port Area, Manila on Friday, June 4.
A native of Cagayan de Oro, Carreon graduated with flying colors from Gusa Regional Science High School.
Hailing from Cavite, Gaviola, on the other hand, graduated from the Philippine Science High School Main Campus with honors.
Ursabia reminded the young cadets to “showcase their knowledge and re-echo what they learned” once they returned to the Philippines.
"As scholars, this send-off comes with the promise of personal growth, international camaraderie, and commitment to PCG and our country," the PCG Commandant said.
Carreon and Gaviola will be formally appointed as international cadets of the USCGA, Class of 2025 on the swearing-in ceremony at the USCGA, New London, Connecticut on June 28.
Upon graduation, they will be commissioned in the PCG with the rank of Ensign and will deliver at least eight years of continuous active service.
Ursabia also recognized the U.S. Coast Guard and the Deputy Chief of Coast Guard Staff for Education and Training (CG-12) for their significant roles in making the scholarship program possible.
“To our dear cadets, you will now face an opportunity like no other and learn from one of the best and the reputable institutions in the world. Getting into the international cadetship program is a rewarding experience. Cherish it, enjoy it, and prepare for it," he added.
Four young Filipino cadets graduated from the USCGA on Wednesday, May 19, where US President Joe Biden as the guest of honor and speaker.
The USCGA Class of 2021 is composed of 240 new graduates, including seven international students from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Georgia.
