Nonito Donaire grateful for wife's role during training camp

Filipino boxing icon Nonito Donaire paid homage to his wife Rachel for guiding him in his road to become the new WBC bantamweight champion.

Taking it to Instagram, Donaire wrote a lengthy post to appreciate Rachel, saying it wasn't easy being a female coach in the sport, especially when it comes to boxing due to negative comments.

"Throughout camp we had numerous conversations on strategy and also shifting or changing strategy as to how she sees it would work. Not only that, she helped me to be able to perform best inside the ring by pushing me with all the strength and conditioning and speed and agility drills," said the 38-year-old Donaire.

"Finally as a voice in the corner, all were instructed she was the only one to talk. I could hear her voice above everyone so it makes it easier for me to stay focused on the game plan rather than making it a more difficult night. I am grateful to my Queen for all that she does, not only in the gym but also the house to make camp run smoothly."

The Boholano champion also recalled having sparring rounds with Rachel which only involved distance drills, jesting that he "didn't hit her."

Indeed, Rachel, who has a deep background in taekwondo and also five-year member of the US Air Force, was heard instructing from the sidelines as Donaire also gave a shoutout to his wife post-match.

Last week, Donaire stopped Frenchman Nordine Oubaali in four rounds to capture the WBC bantamweight belt at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

He first copped the WBC title, along with the WBO belt, when he defeated Mexican boxer Fernando Montiel in February 2011.

Married for 14 years now, Nonito and Rachel continue to show the epitome of a power couple. They have two sons namely Jarel, 7, and Logan, 6.
