'Habagat' to bring scattered rain showers over western Luzon

The southwest monsoon or "habagat" may bring rain showers over the western section of Luzon, including Metro Manila, in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Saturday afternoon, June 5.

Cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms may affect Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, and Batanes.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or landslides due to scattered moderate to at times heavy monsoon rains.

LIkewise, isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may affect Metro Manila and the rest of the country due to habagat and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA advised the public to remain alert against possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

While the rainy season in the country has officially started, 12 stations still registered above 40 degrees Celsius (°C) heat index on Saturday.

The heat index is the measurement of how hot it feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

Data from the PAGASA showed that the day's highest heat index of 47°C was registered in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan at 2 p.m.

A heat index above 40℃ is considered "dangerous" due to the high likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

Here are the other stations that registered above 40°C heat index on Saturday: Alabat, Quezon (45°C); Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Pasay City (45°C); Legazpi City, Albay (44°C); Roxas City, Capiz (44°C); Sinait, Ilocos Sur (44°C); Aparri, Cagayan (43°C); Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur (43°C); Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (42°C); Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (42°C); Clark Airport, Pampanga (41°C); and Puerto Princesa City (41°C).

So far, the highest heat index in 2021 was 53℃ recorded in Dagupan City, Pangasinan on May 14.
