REFLECTIONS TODAY
The scribes taught that the Messiah was to be the son of David. During Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem the people acclaimed Jesus as the son of David. How could Jesus be both the son of David and the LORD of David? As Jesus’ opponents repeatedly try to “trip him up” with their religious questioning, Jesus turns the tables on them. He raises the issue by quoting Psalm 110. As a descendant of King David, Jesus can claim to be David’s son. But, as Jesus points out using their own means of interpretation, David also calls the Messiah his LORD! Jesus is both God and man. As a man, he is the son (a descendant) of David; as God, he is the Lord of David.
GOSPEL • MARK 12:35-37
As Jesus was teaching in the temple area he said, “How do the scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said:
The Lord said to my lord, ‘Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet.’
David himself calls him ‘lord’; so how is he his son?” The great crowd heard this with delight.
