DA says agriculture losses from 'Dante' top P63M

Agricultural damage caused by the onslaught of tropical storm "Dante" has reached P63.61 million, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.

Citing their latest assessment report Thursday, June 3, the agency said that the damage to agriculture left by the tropical storm has hit P63.61 million, with 1,780 farmers affected by the calamity.

The losses covered 2,623 hectares (ha) of agricultural areas in Western Visayas, Davao, SOCCSKSARGEN and Caraga regions. This translates to 2,309 metric tons worth of lost production. Affected commodities include rice, corn and other high value crops.

Meanwhile, 86,448 metric tons of produce amounting to P1.59 billion were harvested early in the bid to prevent further agricultural losses.

This covered around 20,000 ha of rice in Regions I, II, III, IV-A and VI. As for corn, a total of 7,758 ha have been harvested from Regions I and Mimaropa, with an equivalent production of 42,365 metric tons valued at P720 million.

The DA said that it would be providing assistance to farmers and fisherfolk affected by the tropical storm.

Some 170,000 bags of rice seeds; 34,820 bags of corn seeds; and 11,227 kilos of various vegetables have been readied for distribution to affected farmers in the regions.

Other interventions include access to the Quick Response Fund (QRF) for the rehabilitation of affected areas, drugs and biologics for livestock and poultry needs, Survival and Recovery (SURE) Loan Program of Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC); and available funds from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to indemnify affected farmers.
