Be patient with government's COVID-19 response, Sotto appeals

Senate President Vicente Sotto III has appealed to the public to be more patient with the government and its efforts in addressing the COVID-19 outbreak and its impacts.

In his speech before the Senate adjourned the second regular session Thursday night, June 3, Sotto recognized calls for authorities to do more in responding to the pandemic, particularly after the recent spike in coronavirus infections and its impacts to the country.

"We often think that our government is not acting fast enough. There may be some truth to that statement. But let me put it in context: In extraordinary times such as this — where there are so many unknowns --- no government, not even the most advanced country in the world can act fast enough," Sotto said.

"I say this not as an excuse, but as an exhortation to be patient. Hindi ko nais na isawalang bahala ang inyong puna, kung mayroon man. Hangad ko lang ang na habaan natin ang ating pisi at pasensiya (I am not brushing aside your comments, if there are any. I only ask that we be more patient)," he appealed.

"I would like to think that similar to the fable of the tortoise and the hare, we will win over the pandemic not because of how fast we run, but how wise we are at strategizing for the win," he further said.

Sotto expressed optimism that the Philippines will soon end the health crisis.

He called for unity in the country, and for people to keep their minds open, especially for helping their fellowmen.

"I know that in difficult times, the blame game is easy to play. But I also know it does not do the situation any good. Madali ang humanap ng sisi. Ngunit, saganang akin, hindi ito nakabubuti (It's easy to pin the blame on others, but for me, it doesn't do any good)," he said.

"Nonetheless, I also believe that in moments of national crisis, our people expect more from their government," Sotto maintained.

As for the Senate, Sotto assured that they will "do best" in contributing to solving and responding to the country's needs.

The 18th Congress' third regular session will open in July.
