United City, Kaya-Iloilo battered by tough foes in AFC Champions League

Philippines Football League champion United City received a rude awakening even as Kaya-Iloilo suffered another lopsided defeat Tuesday, June 29 in their AFC Champions League matches held simultaneously in separate locations.

United City was handed a 7-0 beating by K-League side Daegu of South Korea in their Group I match in Tashkent, Uzbekistan while Kaya fell 5-0 to Viettel, the champion of Vietnam’s top division V.League 1, in Pathum Thani, Thailand.

The outcome of both matches was an indication of how the two Filipino clubs are far behind the competition in only their second matches in Asia’s premier club competition.

United City remains with one point in Group I while Kaya lost for the second straight time in Group F.

For United City, it was the most lopsided loss since taking over ownership of the club formerly known as Ceres-Negros last year.

Daegu took the lead on Cesinha’s opener in the 23rd minute before going into halftime with a 3-0 lead as Edgar scored in the 42nd after teammate Lee Keun-ho intercepted a pass and Cesinha finding the net for the second time with a shot past United City keeper Anthony Pinthus.

An Yong-woo netted two goals in the second half while Park Han-bin and Jung Chi-in scored before the final whistle, the latter coming from the penalty spot.

It was a nightmare for Kaya right at the beginning as Viettel went ahead 2-0 in the first eight minutes as Nguyen Hoang Duc struck the opener almost 90 seconds after the opening whistle and Caique converted off Kaya goalie Michael Casas.

Bui Tien Dung made it 3-0 four minutes into the restart while Caique and Vu Minh Tuan produced the fourth and fifth goals for Viettel past the hour mark.

Kaya did try to produce a goal just before the end of the contest but Viettel was able to preserve a shutout victory.
