TS 'Dante' speeds up, 4 areas remain under wind signals

Tropical storm “Dante” (international name “Choi-wan”) has accelerated and continues to move north northwestward over the coastal waters west of Pangasinan, the state weather bureau said Thursday, June 3.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the center of the tropical cyclone was spotted 145 kilometers (km) west northwest of Dagupan City, Pangasinan at around 7 a.m.

It still packed a maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph. The storm accelerated while moving north northwestward at a speed of 35 kph.

Based on the severe weather bulletin issued at 8 a.m., tropical cyclone wind signal No. 2 was raised over the western portion of Pangasinan.

Signal No. 1 was hoisted over the central portion of Pangasinan, northwestern portion of Tarlac, and northern portion of Zambales.

PAGASA said Dante was forecast to bring moderate to heavy rains over Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Islands, and Calamian Islands.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains may affect Ilocos Region Cordillera Administrative Region, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro, and the northern portion of mainland Palawan including Cuyo Islands.

Dante will continue tracking generally north northwestward over West Philippine Sea in the next 12 hours before turning north northeastward Thursday afternoon or evening and northeastward Friday morning, June 4, the agency said.

It added that the weather disturbance will be over the Bashi Channel Friday afternoon or evening. It is seen to weaken into a tropical depression within the next 12 hours and into a remnant low on Saturday, June 4.
