Laoag, Tuguegarao cities record day's highest heat index at 46°C

The computed heat index values in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan reached 46 degrees Celsius (°C) on Thursday, June 3, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)

The heat index is the measurement of how hot it feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

Data from the PAGASA showed that the air temperature in Laoag City was 34.6°C and the relative humidity was 64 percent, which brings the heat index to 46°C.

Meanwhile, Tuguegarao City's air temperature was 37.3°C and the relative humidity was 48 percent, resulting in a heat index of 46°C.

A heat index above 40℃ is considered "dangerous" due to the high likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

Here are the other stations that registered above 40°C heat index on Thursday: Aparri, Cagayan (44°C); Roxas City, Capiz (44°C); Butuan City, Agusan del Norte (43°C); Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (43°C); Infanta, Quezon (43°C); Sinait, Ilocos Sur (43°C); Alabat, Quezon (42°C); Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (42°C); Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur (42°C); Legazpi City, Albay (41°C); and Masbate City, Masbate (41°C).

So far, the highest heat index in 2021 was 53℃ recorded in Dagupan City, Pangasinan on May 14.
