'Dante' slows down while over West PH Sea

Tropical storm “Dante” (international name “Choi-wan”) has decelerated while moving northwestward over the West Philippine Sea, the state weather bureau said Thursday, June 3.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the center of the storm was spotted 255 kilometers (km) west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur at around 4 p.m.

It maintained a maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph while moving northwestward at 25 kph.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the storm may affect Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and Northern Palawan.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

The agency said Dante will likely move generally northward or north northeastward in the next 12 hours.

PAGASA said the weather disturbance is forecast to exit the northwestern boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between Thursday night and Saturday morning, June 4.

“Afterwards, it will re-enter the PAR Friday afternoon while moving northeastward over the Bashi Channel,” it said.

Dante is seen to weaken into a tropical depression Friday afternoon and into a remnant low on Saturday, June 5.
