'Dante' death toll now at 4 as man was hit by lightning in OccMin

A 19-year old man died after he was struck by lightning in San Jose town of Occidental Mindoro on Wednesday during the onslaught of tropical storm "Dante", the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) disclosed on Thursday, June 3.

The death of Arnel Emabanecido rose the death toll of 'Dante' onslaught to four, as three people were earlier reported dead in Davao Region and Central Mindanao.

The OCD-MIMAROPA (Mindoro Occidental and Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) said the victim and his friend sought refuge under a tree in Barangay in Barangay Mapayapa at around 3:30 p.m. due to heavy rains and thunderstorm.

A few minutes later a lightning struck the tree and hit Emabanecido. The report stated that the incident resulted in the burning of the right side of the victim.

He was taken to the Wesmin Hospital but since there was no attending physical present, he was transferred to the Asilo Hospital where he was declared dead.

Based on the OCD data, more than 2,600 people were displaced due to severe flooding in 18 barangays in Davao Region and Central Mindanao region.

Aside from two fatalities reported in Davao region and one in Central Mindanao, another one was reported missing in Central Mindanao with two others reported injured.

Authorities are still conducting assesment to determine the extent of the damage of the weather disturbance.
