Bienvenido Marañon's naturalization moves closer to reality

Bienvenido Marañon could soon become a Filipino citizen after the Spanish-born footballer’s naturalization bill was transmitted to Malacanang for President Duterte’s signature.

A check on the House of Representatives website showed that the bill was sent to the Palace Wednesday, June 2, two weeks after the lower chamber agreed on the amendments made by the Senate.

Marañon can either wait for Duterte’s signature or if the bill is not signed after 30 days before he can become a Filipino citizen.

The 34-year-old striker of Philippines Football League champion United City has kept a patient approach even after the naturalization process encountered delays.

In fact, the bill was approved at both chambers at the same time as that of Ivorian-born cager Ange Kouame.

Kouame was granted Filipino citizenship last May 18 after it was signed into law by Duterte.

The delay ruled him out of the initial 25-man squad of the Philippine Azkals for next week’s resumption of the World Cup/Asian Cup Qualifiers in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
