Romualdez shelving VP idea?: 'It is not a good decision to run against Duterte'

House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Tuesday, June 29, declared it is “not a good decision” to seek the vice presidency if it would mean running against President Rodrigo Duterte, who appeared to have a change of heart about sliding one rung below in 2022.

Duterte had twice stated he would be willing to give up the endorsement of his political party PDP-Laban as its vice presidential bet if Romualdez will seek the same position.

However, in his public address on Monday night, Duterte stated that he still wanted to pursue his program of governance, adding that he might just run for vice president next year.

“Running for vice president, ako, sabihin ko (this is what I have to say) it is not at all a bad idea. And if there is space for me there... siguro, (maybe),” the chief executive said.

Reacting to the president’s statement, Romualdez said Duterte is indeed “the strongest potential vice presidential candidate next year.”

“Again, let me express my gratitude to President Duterte for his trust and confidence in me. I believe President Duterte is very much qualified and capable to run for vice president,” said Romualdez.

The Lower House official stated: “He remains very popular five years after his election as the sixteenth president of the Philippines.”

Romualdez agrees with Duterte’s plan to continue his “good platforms of good government, including fight against corruption, illegal drugs and criminality.”

“While I am keeping my options open, it is not a good decision to run against the President,” Romualdez admitted.

Shortly after Duterte declared he would support Romualdez as a vice presidential bet two weeks ago, the Lakas-CMD party which the House leader heads as president, started preparations for the solon's possible team-up with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte in next year’s national elections.

Lakas-CMD and the Hugpong ng Pagbabago, the local executives party. have reportedly agreed to renew their alliance for the 2022 election but the agreement has yet to be formalized by their respective leaders.
