Death of former President Benigno Aquino III saddens Pope

Pope Francis has expressed sadness over the death of former President Benigno Aquino III.

In a telegram addressed to President Duterte, the pontiff also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the people of the Philippines over Aquino's passing.

His full message as posted by CBCP News is as follows:

"Saddened to learn of the death of former President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of the Philippines. Recalling the late President's service to the nation, I commend his soul into the hands of the all-merciful God. Upon his family and all who mourn his passing I invoke abundant consolation and peace in the Lord."

The Pope visited the country in 2015 during the term of Aquino.

Aquino died on June 24 due to renal failure secondary to diabetes.
