REFLECTIONS TODAY
Discipleship with Jesus is a serious business. Following him is not an easy endeavor. The Teacher himself “has nowhere to rest his head” (v 20). He does not assure a relaxed life for those who aim to follow him. Not comfort, wealth, or fame, but radicality. This is the brand of our discipleship with Jesus. Somehow Jerusalem is a destiny of all his disciples because a disciple becomes truly a disciple when he follows behind his master. But difficult and challenging though discipleship is, Jerusalem is a promising and beautiful place. It is not only a place of passion and death. It is also the place of resurrection—where existence is transformed into a new and better level of life.
GOSPEL • MATTHEW 8:18-22
When Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other shore. A scribe approached and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” Another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But Jesus answered him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.”
