ITCZ likely to bring scattered rain showers over parts of Visayas, Mindanao

Rain showers and thunderstorms due to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) may prevail over some parts of Visayas and Mindanao in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, June 27.

The ITCZ, or the region where trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, will particularly affect Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or landslides as rains may become moderate to at times heavy.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to the southwest monsoon and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also advised the public to stay vigilant against flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms.

Weather specialist Loriedin dela Cruz said the tropical storm with international name "Champi" outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) has started to move away and may not have a direct effect on the country in the coming days.

As of 3 a.m., Champi was estimated at 2,120 kilometers east-northeast of extreme northern Luzon, packing maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 105 kph.

It was moving north-northeastward at 25 kph.
