5.1-magnitude quake jolts Surigao del Sur

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has detected a 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur on Sunday afternoon, June 27.

Phivolcs said the quake, which occurred around 3:14 p.m., originated 14 kilometers southeast of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur.

It was initially measured as a 5.0-magnitude quake.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt as a "moderately strong" shaking at Intensity IV in Bayabas, Cagwait, Marihatag and Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur.

It was also felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur; Dapa, Surigao del Norte; and Gingoog City and Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental; and as a "slight shaking" at Intensity II in San Francisco, Southern Leyte and Cagayan de Oro City, Balingasag, and Villanueva in Misamis Oriental

Meanwhile, it was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity II in Surigao City and Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental and Abuyog, Leyte; and Intensity I in Cagayan de Oro City.

The quake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.

Phivolcs warned that aftershocks are likely to occur.
