Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Saturday, June 26, filed a resolution seeking to express the Upper Chamber's "profound sympathy and sincere condolences" on the passing of former President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III.

The untimely demise of Aquino, "who had lived his life with honesty, integrity, and simplicity so that others may simply live, is a great loss not only to his family but to the Filipino nation as well, particularly those whose lives he had touched," the resolution read.

The measure also cited the achievements of the 15th Philippine President, "the most significant of which was the Philippines’ gallant stand and victory against economic giant China when the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague ruled that China had no claim to the reef within Philippine territorial waters."

It also cited the signing of the peace agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to end decades of conflict in Mindanao.

"Under his leadership, the Philippines recorded remarkable economic growth indicators that opened the doors to the country’s economic recovery, most notable of which are the following: Philippine ranking in the Economic Freedom Index rose from 115 in 2010 to 70th place in 2015; Philippine ranking in the Global Competitiveness Index of World Economic Forum also rose from No. 85 in 2010 to No. 47 in 2015; Philippine ranking in the Global Enabling Trade Index of the World Economic Forum rose from rank 92 in 2010 to rank 64 in 2015; the GDP growth had increased to an annual average of 6.2 percent, the highest in the last 40 years; the inflation rate was reduced to an average of 1.4 percent at the end of 2015, thus strengthening consumer prices; the employment rate increased from 92.7 percent in 2010 to 94.2 percent in January 2016; the unemployment rate decreased to 5.8 percent, the lowest in the last several decades; and the country’s investment on infrastructure was also increased from 1.8 percent of GDP in 2010 to about five percent of GDP in 2016," it further enumerated.

The resolution also cited the recognitions received by the former president abroad "for his exemplary performance".

Sotto also mentioned Aquino's anti-corruption and anti-poverty advocacies, not just during his presidency, but also during his stint as a member of the House of Representatives, from 1998 to 2007, and as a member of the Senate, from 2007 to 2010.

Aquino is the third child and only son of former President Corazon “Cory” C. Aquino and former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

He died in his sleep last Thursday, June 24, due to renal failure secondary to diabetes. He was 61.

Once passed in the Senate, a copy of the resolution will be furnished to the bereaved family of the late former president.
