Fancied Thai squad spoils Kaya-Iloilo's AFC Champions League debut

Kaya-Iloilo’s baptism of fire in the AFC Champions League ended with a 4-1 defeat to BG Pathum United Saturday, June 26 at Leo Stadium in Pathum Thani, Thailand.

Two goals in each half courtesy of Thai football legend Teerasil Dangda and Brazilian striker Diogo spoiled the moment that made Kaya the first Filipino club to play in the group stage of Asia’s premier club competition.

Veteran midfielder Marwin Angeles scored a consolation goal late in the match to give Kaya its first-ever Champions League goal.

The loss served as what is likely to be a preview of the rough goings the Kaya is expected to endure in Group F of the Champions League’s East region which also includes defending champion Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea and Vietnamese champion Viettel.

Kaya kept the match scoreless until the 23rd minute when Teerasil bundled the opener from close range after his first attempt was blocked by Audie Menzi, the goalscorer of Wednesday’s playoff win over Shanghai Port, and goalkeeper Michael Casas failing to secure the ball during the scramble.

BG Pathum United, the winner of last season’s Thai League 1, doubled the lead in the 39th when Diogo beat two defenders and Casas for a left-footed strike.

Kaya was reduced to 10 men four minutes after the restart when Simone Rota was booked a straight red card for bringing down Diogo near the semi-circle on the edge of the penalty area.

Diogo made it 3-0 shortly after, firing a low attempt past a wall of defenders and Casas to score into the far post.

BG Pathum United scored its final goal in the 59th when Diogo sent a cross to Teerasil who headed the ball into the back of the net.

Kaya didn’t end the night without a silver lining as confusion in the BG Pathum United backline allowed Angeles to fire a left-footed strike off a touch by substitute Kenshiro Daniels in the 81st minute.
