PCG flies flags at half-mast to mourn ex-PNoy's passing

The national flags in all Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) stations across the country were flown at half-mast to mourn and honor the passing of former President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III.

The PCG said Friday, June 25, that it joined all Filipinos in mourning and praying for the death of the 15th president of the Republic of the Philippines.

“The Philippine flag of all the Coast Guard Station and Coast Guard Sub-Station shall be flown at half-mast until his burial,” the PCG said.

Aquino, who championed “Daang Matuwid” campaign and scored a landmark ruling against China’s aggressive claims in the West Philippine Sea, has passed away in his sleep on Thursday morning due to renal disease secondary to diabetes. He was 61.

The Aquino administration initiated the filing of a case against China’s excessive claims in the West Philippine Sea before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2013.

It was the result of a standoff between PCG's BRP Gregorio del Pilar and Chinese surveillance ships at Scarborough Shoal (Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal) in Zambales in 2012, following the discovery of alleged illegal fishing activities of Chinese fishermen in the country's waters.

The court handed a ruling in favor of the Philippines in 2016.
