House leaders air admiration for Pnoy, sympathies for his family More key leaders of the House of Representatives have come out to express sincere sympathies to the family of the late former President Benigno “Pnoy” Aquino III whom they extolled as a great leader of the country.

Deputy Speakers Bro. Eddie Villanueva (CIBAC Partylist) and Marlyn Alonte (Lone District, Biñan City) issued separate statements declaring their sadness over Thursday’s passing of the former chief executive.

AAMBIS-OWA Rep. Sharon Garin, chairperson of the House Committee on Economic Affairs, recalled Aquino’s numerous economic achievements during his term.

On the other hand, Anakalusugan Partylist Rep. Michael Defensor said he and Aquino remained good friends despite political differences.

“As a colleague in the 11th Congress and as a friend, Pres. Noy and I have shared fond memories. While our lives are enmeshed in politics and there may have been differences at certain periods of time , we have remained good friends throughout the years,” said Defensor.

The split in the Liberal party triggered their animosity for each other. Defensor was identified with the Arroyo-allied wing of the party while Aquino supported the Drilon wing.

“We lost a great leader today,” declared Villanueva on Thursday, June 24.

“Indeed, the country lost a great public servant today. President Benigno Aquino III’s inspirational leadership spurred the nation to walk the path of Daang Matuwid. He improved the lives of many and led the country valiantly through difficult times,”said Villanueva, whose son, Senator Joel Villanueva served as Aquino’s secretary for technical education.

In her statement, Alonte also cited the late president as a “good man who served his country with utmost passion and the highest standard of integrity.” “The people of the Lone District of Biñan would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the Aquino family in this difficult time,” said Alonte.

Garin lauded Aquino for his anti-graft stance and “strong economic policies.” “I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Former President Noynoy Aquino whose brand of governance fostered transparency, inclusivity, and progress,” she said.

Garin added: “His administration’s strong economic policies empowered Filipinos from all walks of life and is now helping the country weather the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
