For increased awareness: PCG activates new base in Eastern Sulu

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has activated a base station in Luuk, Sulu on Wednesday, June 23, to increase maritime awareness in the southern part of the country.

During the ceremony, PCG Commandant Admiral George Ursabia Jr. shared that the activation of the Coast Guard base was aimed at stepping up their presence in eastern Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

"We want to help the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) in upholding peace and prosperity in this part of the country. Please accept our efforts in helping the economy of Sulu, particularly in the maritime sector," Ursabia said during the ceremony in Barangay Tanduh Bato, Luuk, Sulu.

The PCG commandant underscored that the Coast Guard station will increase law enforcement operations in eastern Sulu as more personnel will be deployed in the province.

Piracy, terrorism, and sea-based kidnapping are among the security challenges that have long plagued the waters of Sulu.

"We are here to ensure maritime safety, maritime security, and protection of the marine environment. We have nothing in mind but humanitarian efforts. Kami po ay kakampi ninyo. Kami po ay nandito (We are on your side. We are here) to help you because we care for you," Ursabia added.

The PCG started on Monday, June 21, the third phase of their maritime drills, which zero in on anti-piracy and anti-terrorism in Mindanao to strengthen the maritime law enforcement within the region.

Members of the Coast Guard Special Operations Force were deployed in the region with four ships and three helicopters.
