Danny Kingad sets sights on Demetrious Johnson rematch

Team Lakay's flyweight contender Danny Kingad has set his sight for a second shot against mixed martial arts legend Demetrious Johnson in the Circle.

Kingad, currently ranked No. 2 in the flyweight division, has been inactive since beating Chinese opponent Wei Xie at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last January 2020.

Prior to that, Kingad went toe to toe with Johnson in the flyweight grand prix final with the former UFC veteran taking home the tournament belt via unanimous decision.

Since then, it has been a goal of "The King" to retake his rightful throne by setting up a rematch with Johnson, who is also the No. 1 flyweight contender.

"Of course, he is the greatest of all time, the GOAT, and I would really like to have a rematch with him," the 25-year-old said. "After that fight, we watched it over and over again to see what went wrong for me. We really went back to square one for me to be able to sharpen those skills that Iacked against DJ."

Kingad was supposed to see action against No. 4 Kairat Akhmetov last December but the bout was scrapped due to COVID-19 concerns.

The 25-year-old Kingad earlier expressed desire to challenge the reigning champion Bibiano Fernandes, who made history after scoring a second-round knockout win against Johnson last April.

Fernandes, in the process, became the first man to knock out the legendary American fighter.

That said, Kingad has three possible scenarios for his comeback: a rematch with Johnson; to settle unfinished business with Akhmetov; or a direct title shot against Fernandes.

"I will definitely be back stronger. It's been close to two years since we last two fought and a lot has already happened in our own careers. I'm more than ready to take on DJ again," added the Team Lakay stalwart, who holds a 14-2 record.
