DOH logs 6,043 additional COVID-19 cases

The Department of Health (DOH) reported 6,043 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases nationwide on Thursday, June 24.

Based on its latest data, the country's active infections stood at 51,410. Of this figure, 90.6 percent were mild, 4.5 percent were asymptomatic, two percent were severe, 1.4 percent were in critical condition, while 1.44 percent were moderate cases.

The total number of recoveries increased to 1,302,814 after 4,486 more patients recovered from the viral disease. The country's recovery rate is at 94.5 percent.

However, 108 more fatalities were recorded. This brought the total to 24,036 with the country’s case fatality rate at 1.74 percent, the DOH said.

Amid the threat of the Delta coronavirus variant, members of the OCTA Research Group urged the national government to increase its capacities against COVID-19, particularly on testing, tracing, isolation, border control, vaccination, and the strict implementation of health protocols.

Hospitals were also urged to increase their capacities that are dedicated for COVID-19 patients.

The national government should also anticipate the worst case scenario if the Delta variant reaches the communities, said Molecular biologist Fr. Nicanor Austriaco.

So far, the Philippines has detected 17 cases of Delta variant involving returning overseas Filipino workers.
