When will Robredo announce her 2022 plans? By late September, she says

Vice President Leni Robredo’s supporters and political observers may have to wait a little longer before she decides whether she would run for president in the May 2022 polls.

Robredo said she would make a final decision on her future political plans come September—just a month before the official filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for next year’s national elections.

“Iyong deadline natin (our deadline is) at the very latest end of September,” Robredo, a leader of the opposition, said in a media interview in Manila on Tuesday, June 22.

The vice president added she is seeking divine guidance on whether or not to run for the country’s highest post.

“Pinagdadasal natin na makarating tayo sa puntong iyon (I’m praying that I will come to that point).”

Robredo has yet to confirm whether she would be running for the country’s highest elective post, or if she would gun for the gubernatorial seat in Camarines Sur, her home province.

The uncertainty over her next political move was partly why former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV recently declared his intention to be the standard-bearer of the opposition if she drops out of the race.

Both Robredo and Trillanes are opposition coalition 1Sambayan’s nominees for the national slate that it will field in 2022.

The vice president believes the opposition must be united and should only have a lone candidate to beat President Duterte’s anointed one in the upcoming elections.

“Kasi kung gusto natin na isa lang talaga iyong—makabuo ng isang unity ticket, maraming trabahong kailangan gawin (Because if we really want to have one—to form a unity ticket, we have a lot pf work to do),” she said.

“So hopefully marami iyong mag-agree na (many will agree) to come together para mapag-usapan. Isang bagay iyon na tina-trabaho ko ngayon. Pero mayroon pa tayong (to discuss it. One thing that I’m working on right now. But we still have) until September to do that,” Robredo added.
