Robredo thanks 'pro-labor' Chile for fair treatment of Filipino workers

Vice President Leni Robredo met with Chilean Ambassador to the Philippines Claudio Alberto Rojas Rachel on Tuesday, June 22, expressing her gratitude to the Chilean government for treating some 860 Filipinos well in the host country.

“I thanked His Excellency for the fair treatment and good working conditions of the 860 Filipinos residing in Chile who are mostly household service workers, students, professionals, and missionaries,” she said in a Facebook post Tuesday night.

The vice president shared several photos of their meeting at the Quezon City Reception House, where she holds office.

“The Government of Chile is generally seen as pro-labor and most of the Filipinos residing there hold legitimate work contracts and are treated well,” Robredo added.

The lady official said Rojas was with Marco Antonio Navarro Ahumada, the Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul.

During the meeting, they discussed “the good diplomatic relations” between the Philippines and Chile, which is made “even stronger” by the signing recently of the Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Joint Economic Commission.

The two countries are also celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Philippines-Chile diplomatic relations this year.

Rojas arrived in the country in October last year after succeeding Ambassador José Miguel Capdevila Villarroel. In December, he presented his credentials virtually to President Duterte.
