Metro Manila's COVID-19 cases nearing pre-surge levels -- OCTA

The number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in Metro Manila continued to decrease with an average of 700 cases per day, close to the 500 cases per day average before the surge in March, OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said on Wednesday, June 23.
"Nag-improve naman karamihan ng lugar sa NCR . Nag-aaverage tayo 700 cases per day. Yung pre-surge levels natin nasa 500 cases per day. Halos malapit na rin ang NCR dun sa pre-surge levels (Most of the areas in NCR have improved. We are averaging 700 cases per day. Our pre-surge levels are at 500 cases per day and NCR is close to that level)," David said in a DZBB interview.
In the OCTA's report on Tuesday, June 22, Metro Manila's average of 700 COVID-19 cases per day during the June 15-21 period was lower by 15 percent over the past week.
This corresponds to an average daily attack rate (ADAR) of 5.07 per 100,000, which is considered "moderate-low."
The reproduction number in Metro Manila over the same period was 0.73.
Health care utilization are within "safe levels"--35 percent hospital bed occupancy, 42 percent ICU bed occupancy, and 31 percent mechanical ventilator occupancy
Among the areas in Metro Manila, OCTA said Navotas had the lowest average number of cases and lowest ADAR, which means it is close to being classified as a low-risk area for COVID-19.
However, David said that OCTA still observed a high number of COVID-19 cases in Davao City and Tacloban City.
There is also an increasing number of cases in Cebu City and Cotabato City but still not considered "alarming" because the ADAR and hospital utilization rate in these areas are still manageable.
"Sa ibang regions din dito sa NCR Plus tumataas tulad sa Calumpit, Bulacan at San Pablo, Laguna pero spikes pa lang yun. Hindi pa necessarily alarming yun (In other regions here in NCR Plus it is also increasing such as Calumpit, Bulacan and San Pablo, Laguna but those are just spikes. That's not necessarily alarming)," David pointed out.
"Ang pinakaconcern yung mga matataas ang bilang ng kaso tulad ng Davao City, Bacolod, Iloilo City, Cagayan de Oro. Lalo na yung iba dito mataas ang hospital utilization nila. Pati yung ICU utilization nila (We are most concerned about the high number of cases in Davao City, Bacolod, Iloilo City, and Cagayan de Oro. Some of these areas have high hospital utilization, as well as ICU utilization)," he explained.
This means that there are more severe cases in these areas, David said.
"This indicates na mga variants na yung kumakalat sa regions nila (that the variants are already spreading in these areas). Hindi naman yung Delta variant pero baka yung Alpha or Beta variant (it may not be the Delta variant but maybe the Alpha or Beta variant)," he added.
David also explained that local government units are placed under "areas of concern" if they have a high number of COVID-19 cases and high hospital utilization rate.
"Hindi lang naman yung cases ang tinitignan natin (We are not just looking at the number of cases)," he added.
