Hontiveros asks DFA to summon China again over additional ships at WPS
Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday called on the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to summon China’s ambassador to the Philippines once again to inquire about the presence of 100 additional Chinese vessels reportedly within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) at the West Philippine Sea.
“We should not allow China’s abuses in our country to continue. We, as a nation, are owed dignity and respect. China is getting blatant,” Hontiveros said in a statement.
A report by data analysis company Simularity reported that since May, the number of likely Chinese ships spiked from 129 to 238, an increase of over 100 ships.
The report also detailed that between mid-May and mid-June 2021, the number of ships within the Union Banks increased from nine (9) to 236 and the number of ships near Gaven (Burgos) Reef in Tizard Bank decreased from 234 to 71.
Hontiveros said she trusts the DFA to lodge another diplomatic protest regarding this issue.
“Instead of de-escalating the tensions in the disputed waters, they doubled down. This clearly shows that China is shamelessly hellbent on aggravating the situation,” she lamented.
“We’ve been protesting for months, making an appeal, making a stand, but all of our actions are being ignored. And instead of leaving our territory and following the law, it seems they increased the number of their huge vessels,” she pointed out.
Malacañang, she said, should unambiguously condemn China’s incessant presence in the WPS. She also reiterated her call for the Palace to strictly refrain from releasing statements that weaken the country’s claim over its own territorial waters.
“The Palace should look Beijing straight in the eye and tell her to remove her ships from our territories,” she reiterated.
