DOH urges LGUs in Central Visayas to accept walk-ins in vaccinations sites

CEBU CITY – The Department of Health-Central Visayas (DOH Region 7) is encouraging local government units (LGUs) to allow walk-ins in vaccination sites.

DOH Region 7 Director Jaime Bernadas said accepting walk-ins will help speed up the government’s vaccination campaign and will also help avoid vaccine wastage.

“We are not discouraging walk-ins. Discouraging also means limiting the target for the day. Walk-ins will also help with the quick substitution list in order for the vaccination host to accomplish the target for the day,” Bernadas said in a press briefing Tuesday, June 22.

As of June 21, Central Visayas has received 783,710 doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

COVID-19 brands that the region has received included Sputnik V by Russia’s Gamaleya Research Institute, AstraZeneca by UK-Sweden AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNtech by US-based Pfizer and Germany-based BioNTech SE, and CoronaVac by China’s Sinovac Biotech.

Data from DOH Region 7 showed that there had been 45 wasted doses, 30 of them were AstraZeneca and 15 were Sinovac. Improper storing and unconsumed vials were among the causes of the wastage.

Dr. Van Phillip Baton, vaccination spokesperson of DOH Region 7, reported that the agency was able to post double-digits in its vaccination coverage rate for all qualified recipients in the region.

The DOH Region 7, however, noted a low turnout in the A2 sector (senior citizens) with only a success rate of only 17.5 percent as of June 21.

“It’s really low. We’re urging our local governments to have our senior citizens be more active in terms of registering for the vaccination, and provide solutions that are more sensitive to the plight of our seniors and elderlies,” said Baton.
