DepEd bares three possible school opening dates for school year 2021-2022
Barely three weeks before the current school year ends, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, June 23, revealed the three possible school opening dates for the upcoming school year.

“We are proposing that he choose among either Aug. 23, 2021, Sept. 6, 2021, or Sept. 13, 2021,” DepEd said in a statement.
The last day for the current school year, 2021-2022, will be on July 10 based on the adjusted school calendar of DepEd.
“We will release the final school calendar for School Year 2021-2022 once we get the final approval of the President,” it added.
As decided by the President, the conduct of limited face-to-face classes in low risk areas - as recommended by DepEd - remains postponed as of now.
To ensure learning continuity, DepEd said that it will continue the implementation of “enhanced blended learning.”

Curriculum review
As it prepares for the opening of a new school year, DepEd said that efforts towards the pivot for quality education continues.
During a virtual press briefing on June 21, DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado San Antonio said that concerned units of the agency are reviewing the K to 12 curriculum.
Citing initial results, San Antonio said that the curriculum review “has actually shown that our curriculum standards, performance and context standards are comparable with those standards of any other country around the world.”
However, San Antonio said that DepEd also discovered that the curriculum - especially the intended one - is “really congested” and it “really demands that we decongest the curriculum we pay attention to most essential competencies.”
DepEd said that the latest version of the curriculum, initially called the “2022 version of K to 12 curriculum” will be ready by the end of this year.

Ready for school opening
As part of the school opening preparations, DepEd conducted the early registration last March to May.
According to Undersecretary for Planning, Human Resource, and Organization Development Jesus Mateo, there are 4.5 million incoming Kinder, Grades 1, 7 and 11 learners who are already registered for the upcoming school year of June 2021. This, he noted, is “higher” compared to previous early registration in SY 2021-2021.
Mateo said that for the rest of the grade levels, there will be an enrollment period. The schedule, however, will depend on the approved date of school opening for SY 2021-2022.
Meanwhile, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said that DepEd continues to prepare for the school opening because “education should continue” even during emergencies such as the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Last school year, DepEd also gave the President three choices for school opening: Aug. 24, Sept. 7, and Oct. 5.
President Duterte chose the latest date, thus, classes in public schools nationwide started on Oct. 5 wherein students learned lessons at at home using multiple learning delivery modalities such as modular (printed and offline), online learning, television and radio-based instruction and blended learning (a combination of two or more learning delivery modes).
