Construction of high dam in Iloilo starts

ILOILO CITY – The construction of a high dam that is part of an P11.2-billion project has started in Iloilo.

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) confirmed that the first layer concrete body for the high dam of the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project (JRMP-II) has been poured at the project site in Calinog.

Steve Cordero, JRMP-II spokesperson, explained that it is the tallest of the three dams and will serve as the reservoir dam.

“It will store an estimated 250.70 million cubic meters of water that will be utilized for irrigation, hydropower, bulk water, inland fishery, and eco-tourism purposes,” Cordero said.

The construction commenced after the Daewoo Engineering and Construction (DEC), the Korean contractor, completed year-long preparatory works for the high dam’s foundation.

The construction of the JRMP-II dams also signaled a new approach for NIA in terms of dam construction in the country.

The NIA is adapting the roller compacted concrete (RCC) method, which is globally accepted as “as alternative to conventional concrete due to its economic value, high performance, and high speed of construction.” NIA is targeting the completion of the entire JRMP-II by 2023.
