Binay snubs LP's unity offer: 'There are wounds that need to be healed'

Senator Nancy Binay on Tuesday intimated she is not interested in joining forces with the former ruling political party for the upcoming May 2022 elections.

Binay said there are still “wounds” that need healing.

“May mga sugat na dapat munang gamutin bago kami mag-usap tungkol sa 2022 (There are wounds that need to heal first before we even talk anything about 2022),” Binay said in a statement.

The senator did not elaborate, but it can be recalled that the former administration of President Benigno Aquino III, then chairman of the Liberal Party, pursued an investigation into corruption allegations against Binay’s father, former Vice President Jejomar Binay and some of their family members.

The elder Binay later ran against then LP’s presidential bet Manuel “Mar” Roxas during the 2016 elections.

Both Binay and Roxas lost to then Davao City Mayor and now President Rodrigo Duterte.

In an interview on Tuesday morning, Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, president of the LP, confirmed that the party is making efforts to reach out to prospective candidates such as Senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Joel Villanueva and Binay, as well as Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno.

“We really need unity and we really need to come together to provide solutions dito sa mga pagsubok na hinaharap natin (to these problems we are facing),” Pangilinan said.
