Three cargo containers filled with P9 million worth of misdeclared red onions were recently uncovered at the Port of Subic, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) said Monday, June 21.

Instead of the pre-declared item of yellow onions, the particular shipment that came from China was found loaded with red onions.
The shipment, consigned to Gingarnion Agri Trading, arrived in Subic on May 29. It was filed and processed on June 8. Then, on June 14, it was intercepted at the port following a physical inspection.
"Examination revealed that the shipment contained fresh red onion, which was misdeclared as fresh yellow onion and was later on discovered that the consignee failed to secure a Sanitary and Phytosanitary Import Clearance (SPSIC) from the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI)," the bureau explained.
It added that the shipment's interception was facilitated by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service and the Enforcement and Security Service of the port. The DA-BPI also assisted the BOC.
