Wall murals by CCP awardees transform into songs

Now these walls sing with the piano, violin, flute, and other instruments, including the conga and the kulintang

Three wall murals by a trio of artists from the 2018 Thirteen Artist Awardees (TAA) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) have been reinterpreted into musical compositions by promising students in a project entitled ART + MUSIC by CCA.

Headlined by the Music Production students of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, the project aimed to encapsulate the emotions brought about by the artworks around the college’s School of Design and Arts campus.

Bakwit by Archie Oclos

“Bakwit” by street artist Archie Oclos, a 70-meter mural which depicts the plight and hardships of the Lumad students who were forced to leave their schools and communities due to militarization, has been turned into music by Ben Ayes, who creates three themes that reflect the provincial life, the tragedies of oppression, and the hope to narrate these struggles.

Hindi Tutoo by Doktor Karayom

“Hindi Totoo” by multimedia artist Rasel Trinidad, also known as Doktor Karayom, which explores peculiar characters, Filipino mythological creatures, and the subjects of horror, has been given a dark melody by Dwight Ian Perez, who utilizes the kulintang, conga, and piano for percussion, violin, cello and bass guitar for string, and flute and bassoon for woodwind.

Dead Masks by Zeus Bascon

“Dead Masks” by multidisciplinary artist Zeus Bascon, made up of four writhing serpents in the form of lined emotionless masks, is unraveled by Daniel Carlos through the piano, synthesizer, violin, cello, and crystal flute as a spiritual and ethereal guide to the afterlife.

This venture is part of the Composition Class under their teacher, art director, and composer Gian Gianan. The entries were screened by the lineup of Oclos, Trinidad, Bascon, Gianan, and exhibition co-curators Center for Campus Art (CCA) director Architect Gerry Torres and 2000 TAA Karen Ocampo Flores.

The compositions will serve as the score for the “ART + MUSIC by CCA” music video, directed by CCA associate and multimedia artist Raine Sanciangco, which will be available on view this July.
