Learn the way of the brush

Sumi-e, a Japanese term that literally translates to black ink (sumi) and painting (e), is an art form that uses gradations of ink to capture the timeless beauty of the natural world. It is art done in monochrome known as the embodiment of Japanese aesthetics.

In the 14th century, Zen Buddhist monks from China introduced this style of ink art to Japan. As an art form, it focuses on expressing reality through quality of the line and bare form.

This art making is part of Zen, rigorous self-restraint and meditation-practice, channeled through black ink painted with brush on a simple white sheet of paper.

Learn sumi-e for free with a two-part public lecture workshop, “The Way of the Brush.” Hosted by De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Arts and Culture Cluster, the webinar will be facilitated by artist and educator Chloe Dellosa via video conference.

Chloe works with a wide array of art media, her expertise ranges from paper-cutting and wood carving to painting on canvas, ink-painting, watercolor, and mixed-media. Her pieces have been showcased at various exhibitions at Kaida Contemporary, Altro Mondo, Art Cube, and Art Verite as well as at international galleries in Singapore.

The first of the sessions will dive into the philosophy and history of sumi-e, introducing the delicate brush strokes in four foundational imageries. This class aims to equip attendees the fundamentals in preparation for actual painting.

The other half guides students in application, from materials to the correct holding of brush. This latter lesson will also demonstrate vital techniques with the participants urged to practice painting orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemum, cherry blossoms, mountains, and rocks.

The schedule of the first and second parts first are on Wednesday, June 23, and Wednesday, June 30, 2021, respectively. Sessions will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Chloe is a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Studio Arts (Painting) graduate from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman. She teaches foundational courses such as Drawing, Color Theory and Painting, Materials Exploration, and Art History at DLS-CSB School of Design and Arts.
