Boss Emong blazes past Super Swerte to rule Philracom Chairman's Cup

Lady Luck did not smile on Super Swerte this time as Boss Emong captured the Philippine Racing Commission (Philracom) Chairman's Cup at the Metro Manila Turf Club in Malvar, Batangas on Sunday, June 20.

With Fernando "Dhunoy" Raquel aboard, Boss Emong overtook Sky Shot in the last stretch of the 1,800-meter race then staved off a fiery chase from Super Swerte to cross the line in one minute and 52.4 seconds (13’-21’-23’-25’-28).

The Edward Vincent Diokno-owned grey galloper won just by a head against Mayor Sandy Javier's Super Swerte which ruled the Philracom Commissioner's Cup last month.

"I’m very pleased with the way Boss Emong performed to win this one. But I tell you, you have not yet seen the best of my horse,’’ said Diokno, who pocketed the P1.2 million champion's prize.

Horse breeder Tony Tan said that Boss Emong was only able to prepare for three weeks due to hoof injury.

Besides the top purse, Boss Emong also earned 40 rating points for this year's Presidential Gold Cup.

Super Swerte settled for the P400,000 runner-up prize and 30 rating points while PGC 2020 winner Pangalusian Island of horseowner-breeder Wilbert Tan finished third for P200,000 and 20 points.

Last year's Triple Crown sweeper Heneral Kalentong ended up fourth worth P100,000 and 10 rating points even as Shanghai Grey and Son Also Rises wound up fifth (P60,000), and sixth (P40,000), respectively.

Heneral Kalentong settled for fourth place worth P100,000 while Shanghai Grey (P60,000) and Son Also Rises (P40,000) arrived fifth and sixth, respectively.

The daughter of the former Chairman Sanchez was present to receive the plaque of recognition in honor of his late father Chairman Sanchez.

Also receiving awards during the proceedings were the winners in Philracom’s Summer Racing Festival in veteran Jesse B. Guce (winningest jockey), Manuelito Mamucod (top trainer) and Gabriel Gaerlan’s Rio de Janiero (longshot horse).

Following the Chairman's Cup, the much-awaited Triple Crown will roll off next in July, August and September followed by the Classic Cup and Juvenile Cup in October, and the Silver Cup in November.

Capping off the horse racing year will be the prestigious Presidential Gold Cup on December 12 and the Grand Derby on December 26.
