Andanar honors late pa on Father's Day

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar penned a short Father's Day message for his father, former Interior Undersecretary Wencelito Andanar, who passed away early this year.

In a Facebook post, Andanar did not forget to greet the late public official a Happy Father's Day and said he will live by his legacy.

"When I looked at the mirror this morning I saw a clearer reflection of you, a deeper understanding of who you were, what you dreamt of, and who you are to me," he wrote on Sunday.

"I thank you for your humble public service legacy and I assure you that I will live by it. Happy Father’s Day up above with our Greatest Noble Creator!" he added.

The late Wencelito Andanar succumbed to liver cancer on April 22 at the Veteran’s Memorial Medical Center at the age of 73.

Last month, Secretary Andanar honored his late father by planting a tree in his name at the Arroceros Forest Park in Manila during the Friendship Tree caravan that aimed to mark the 75 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia.

"Papa, a month after your passing we plant a tree in your honor at the Arroceros Forest Park in the City of Manila," the former journo wrote in his post.

Wencelito Andanar served as OIC Governor of Surigao del Norte from 1986 to 1988. Consequently, he served as the Chairman of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) from 1982 to 1992.

During the administration of President Corazon Aquino, the late Andanar was appointed as Presidential Assistant from 1989 to 1992. He was also the Undersecretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government from 2001 to 2007.

In 2018, he was appointed as the Special Envoy of President Duterte to Malaysia. He bridged the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to the global market. Despite the pandemic, he was able to continue to work with the Malaysian government and assist in the repatriation efforts for overseas Filipinos.
