Tropical storm "Dante" (international name "Choi-wan") was already over the Verde Island Passage as it moves towards the southwestern coast of Batangas on Wednesday evening, June 2.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Dante may pass near or in the vicinity of the southwestern portion of Batangas Wednesday evening, then proceed to Bataan and Zambales early Thursday morning, June 3.

Afterward, Dante will emerge over the West Philippine Sea by Thursday morning.

So far, Dante has made landfall six times since Tuesday evening, June 1, said PAGASA weather specialist Ariel Rojas.

These were in Sulat, Eastern Samar; Cataingan, Masbate; Balud, Masbate; Romblon, Romblon; San Agustin, Romblon; and Pola, Oriental Mindoro.

Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 2 remains hoisted over the northern portion Oriental Mindoro, northern portion Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Islands, Batangas, Cavite, Bataan, southwestern portion of Bulacan, western portion of Pampanga, Zambales, western portion of Tarlac, and western portion of Pangasinan in the PAGASA's 8 p.m. bulletin issued on Wednesday.

Signal No. 1 is still up in Marinduque, northern portion of Romblon, the rest of Oriental Mindoro, the rest of Occidental Mindoro, western portion of Quezon, Laguna, Metro Manila, Rizal, the rest of Bulacan, the rest of Pampanga, the rest of Tarlac, western portion of Nueva Ecija, the rest of Pangasinan, southern portion of Benguet, and La Union.

Meanwhile, wind signals in other areas have been lifted.

PAGASA said Dante is still expected to bring strong winds to gale-force winds in areas under Signal No. 2, and strong winds in areas under Signal No. 1 within 24 to 36 hours.

In the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will persist over Cavite, Batangas, Romblon, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Bataan, Zambales, and Pangasinan.

Moderate to heavy rains may also affect the rest of Central Luzon, Laguna, Rizal, Quezon, northern portion of Palawan including Calamian, Cuyo, and Cagayancillo Islands, and northwestern portion of Aklan and Antique.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains will likewise prevail over Metro Manila, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Mountain Province, Kalinga, Abra, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and the rest of Palawan.

PAGASA reminded the public that under these conditions and considering antecedent rainfall, "scattered to widespread flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are expected, especially in areas with high or very high susceptibility to these hazards as identified in hazard maps."

It added that adjacent or nearby areas may experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels.

In its 8 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said that Dante has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph while moving northwestward at 20 kph.

Due to land interaction with the rugged terrain of mainland Luzon, PAGASA said Dante will likely weaken into a tropical depression Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, and into a low pressure area by Saturday, June 5.
